Christmas Connection

Maybe too late for this year, Dick, but I had to share this one with you. From a Facebook friend: Kathy Kexel Okay, I’ve got to share my Burl Ives story. It was December 1983 and Mr. Ives was performing a concert at Viterbo College in La Crosse, where I was ptogram coordinator for the Fine Arts Center. Mr. Ives came in for a sound check, and while he was running through his repertoire, I was chatting with his wife backstage. I mentioned that Burl’s voice reminded me a little of my Dad’s voice when he would sing us to sleep, and that he had passed away in 1978. Mrs. Ives asked what he would sing, and I laughed because he didn’t sing lullabies, but “Red Sails in the Sunset,” “Blue Skirt Waltz,” and an old vamp song, “Minnie Was a Moocher.” Mr. Ives finished his sound check and began to pack up. I went to adjust some lights, and Mrs. Ives went up to Burl and whispered in his ear. He took his guitar back out of his case, sat down and sang all three of those songs.
Thanks Dan. Merry Christmas.
